The Green Office team consists of one general manager, five student coordinators and an enthusiastic group of volunteers. Each coordinator is responsible for all the projects within a certain theme. Some of the projects are ongoing, but you also have a lot of freedom to come up with your own projects for making Wageningen University & Research more sustainable! As a coordinator, you will get a lot of responsibility over your own projects and you will spend about 8 hours per week on the Green Office.

Want to become a volunteer?

We would not be able to achieve many of the things that we do without the help of our great volunteers! There are many ways in which you can get involved with the Green Office as a volunteer. We are always looking for sustainably minded people with some free time to spent. The number of hours that you spent per week differs depending on the activity and on how much input you want to give. Since we have worked with students for a long time and are students ourselves, we know that your study sometimes requires full focus and/or a lot of energy. Therefore, we always have understanding if there are times that you will be less active or miss out on meetings for a while. Depending on your preference and availability, you can choose to take up one or more roles within the team. If you like multiple, you can always ask us what roles are possible to combine.

Since we enjoy coming together, exchanging our experience with our projects and get to know each other, we have one volunteer get together with food and drinks per month. Due to corona, we have limited spots and we also plan everything very well. So if you want to join the next one, please send us an email (greenoffice@wur.nl) so we can send you the sign up form.

Biodiversity – Advocate

We want our campus to become more diverse in terms of variety of life, such as plants and animals. However, we believe that the current vision and management of WUR is not always ambitious enough in prioritizing biodiversity in the development of the campus. As Green Office, we join the dialogue and actively contribute to a more biodiverse campus. Do you want to become our advocate for this? 

What will be your responsibilities?

  1. Contribute to a flora and fauna inventory and monitoring at the WUR campus.
  2. Join the WUR Biodiversity Living Lab as Green Office representative.
  3. Communicate about the biodiversity findings/research on campus via Green Office social media (LinkedIn/Facebook/Instagram).

Who are we looking for?
Someone with a passion for biodiversity and good persuasion skills. It is nice if you have a background in environmental sciences and if you master the Dutch language, but this is not necessary.

Volunteer period: Minimal 6 months (Starting date is flexible)
Time investment: 2 hours a week

What will you learn?

  • All about biodiversity and biodiversity management on campus. 
  • Some new species that you never knew to be present on campus. 
  • An insight in WUR politics and procedures, related to biodiversity.

Sustainable Education – Advocate

We are studying on a very sustainable University, but there are still a lot single-use products being used. In the canteens, obviously, but also as part of our studies. For example the amount of paper we use and the amount of single use products we buy or give away and the options offered at the university (i.e. Studystore). In order to realize a more circular way of studying, we believe that education should follow the 5Rs of sustainability (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle). With this project, we focus on implementing sustainable practices within WUR and the student community of Wageningen.

What will be your responsibilities?

  1. Collect different ways of how to make the education practices at WUR more sustainable. 
  2. Collaborate with the library, study store and other WUR related organisations for implementing sustainable study practices. 
  3. Promote sustainable study practices among students in Wageningen.

Who are we looking for?
Someone with good persuasion skills and a passion for sustainable education in practice. Some networking skills would also be nice, since you will be collaborating with many different people.

Time investment: 2 hours a week

What will you learn?

  • Some nice ways to make your own study practices more sustainable. 
  • Insight in the interaction between circularity and education of WUR. 
  • Networking- and persuasion skills.

Social Media – Team Member

Our work as Green Office depends to a large part on our presence and activity on social media (Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn) since this is the way we can spread knowledge about sustainability to the students and staff of WUR. In order to increase our number of followers and keep everyone informed we are looking for support from volunteers.

What will be your responsibilities?
As a social media volunteer, you will work closely with the Communication & Outreach Coordinator and a team of other social media volunteers. You will come up with a social media plan which includes how often you will post and about what. There is space for your idea input regarding anything related to sustainability that you would like to inform our followers about. 

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for new members of our social media team, who will help us make our social media accounts a fun way of staying informed about our activities and sustainability. As part of the social media team, you can choose to fulfill one (or more) of the following roles:

  • Instagram Designer
  • Facebook Manager
  • Instagram Manager
  • Chief Content (Campus & Operations)
  • Chief Content (Education & Research)
  • Chief Content (Food & Health)

Volunteer period: Minimal 6 months (starting date is variable)
Time investment: 1-2 hours a week

  • The ins and outs about sustainability at WUR.
  • Communication and organisation skills.
  • Running social media platforms with multiple people.

Sustainability Blog – Editor

The Green Office Sustainability blog is a great platform to talk about sustainability at WUR, where we share ideas with students and staff members. Think about waste on campus, sustainable education, energy consumption and the amount of food waste in the canteens. But also, about this one little initiative that nobody knows about yet!

What will be your responsibilities?
As a blog editor, you are free to investigate, interview and share your opinion in your own blog. Or you can also choose to just collect and edit the articles written by others. You will work closely together with the Communication & Outreach Coordinator and a small group of blog writers.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for passionate editors that wants to help us run the blog and make it a success! You should be curious to learn more about sustainability at WUR, be a critical and catching writer and be able to give constructive feedback on the articles of other writers.

Volunteer period: Minimal 6 months (starting date is variable)
Time investment: 2 hours a week

What will you learn?

  • The ins and outs about sustainability at WUR and beyond.
  • Communication skills, both verbal and on paper.
  • Running a blog with multiple people.

How to apply?
At the moment, we have enough blog editors. We will recruit new editors as soon as there is a vacancy in the blog team.

Sustainability Guide – Developer

A lot of students are making sustainable changes in life while studying in Wageningen. Green Office (and WEP) want to facilitate this process by providing a sustainability guide for WUR students. This guide contains all kinds of tips and lifehacks to live a more sustainable lifestyle, both general and more specific to life in Wageningen. The final goal is a (digital) booklet that will be handed out to all AID participants in August. This way, students can learn from each other’s tips and tricks and start “sustainalizing their student life from day one! Of course, we will also promote the booklet among other students in Wageningen.

What will be your responsibilities?

  1. Collecting sustainable tips and lifehacks for a sustainable lifestyle on different themes: food, waste, energy, transport, fashion, studying, organisations, etc.
  2. Collaborating with multiple sustainability organisations in Wageningen to include their initiatives in the booklet. 
  3. Combining the sustainable tips and lifehacks into a small booklet with a nice lay-out.

Who are we looking for?
A creative person with a drive to help people adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. A nice writing style and some designing skills would be nice, but are not necessary.

Volunteer period: 3 months (1st of May – 1st of August)
Time investment: 2-4 hours a week

What will you learn?

  • A lot of new sustainability lifehacks 
  • Communication- and designing skills 

How to apply?
At the moment, we have completed the Sustainability Guide. We will recruit new volunteers if there will be a need to update the guide.

Green Impact – Project Assistants (GIPA)

One of the projects we run is Green Impact. Green Impact is a change and engagement programme to encourage staff and students to form a team and implement actions around environmental and socio-economic issues in their workplace and beyond. 

What will be your responsibilities? 

  • Support teams of WUR staff members in performing sustainability actions.
  • Create workshops on sustainability to stimulate behavioural change in employees.
  • Help in the promotion of Green Impact.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for multiple students that are enthusiastic about sustainability and good at motivating others. We are convinced that many small actions can sum up to a bigger impact and are looking for someone who is excited about running a new and innovative project.

Volunteer period: Minimal 6 months (starting date is variable)
Time investment: 1-2 hours a week

What will you learn?

  • Develop communication, leadership, and professional skills.
  • Improve your understanding of sustainability and behavioural change.
  • Increase your network among students and staff.

Green Impact – Auditor

One of the projects we run is Green Impact. Green Impact is a change and engagement program to encourage staff and students to form a team and implement actions around environmental and socio-economic issues in their workplace and beyond. At the end of teach Green Impact cycle (this year in June 2021), we are looking for people who help us audit the different teams of Green Impact so we can determine their progress and know who the winner of the year is.

What will be your responsibilities?

  • Follow one auditing workshop
  • Audit one Green Impact team (checking the actions they did, if proof was uploaded and how many points they get)
  • Meeting with the Green Impact team to hear what their experience was

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for multiple students that are enthusiastic about sustainability. The auditing position is only a short-term position, which makes it perfect to start with and get to know the Green Office. 

Volunteer period: 1 week (the audits will take place in June)
Time investment: 2-4 hours a week

What will you learn?

  • How to do an audit + official certificate from Students Organizing for Sustainability (SOS) that you joined the workshop.
  • More about the exciting things Green Impact teams do for sustainability on Campus.
  • You will also get in touch with staff members working on sustainability.

How to apply?
Since the audits are not happening currently, we are not looking for this volunteering position yet :)!

Sustainability Blog – Writers

The Green Office Sustainability blog is a great platform to talk about sustainability at WUR, there we share ideas with students and staff members. What will be your responsibilities? 
As a blog writer, you are free to investigate, interview and share your opinion in your own blog. Or you can also choose to just collect and edit the articles written by others. You will work closely together with the Communication & Outreach Coordinator and the two Sustainability Blog Editors. Besides that, you will become part of our volunteer team and you are welcome to join our monthly get togethers as well as group bonding activities and workshops.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for passionate writers that wants to help us fill up the blog and make it a success! You should be curious to learn more about sustainability at WUR and be a critical and catching writer. As a writer, you are not responsible for running or promoting the blog, so you can also do it if you have a limited amount of time.

Volunteer period: minimal 1 blog (but you can write as much as you want)
Time investment: 2-4 hours per blog

What will you learn?

  • The ins and outs about sustainability at WUR and beyond.
  • Communication skills, both verbal and on paper.
  • Running a blog with multiple people.

How to apply?
At the moment, we have enough blog writers. We will recruit new writers as soon as there is space in the blog team.

Student Cooking Corner – Project Leaders

We have a good relationship with the caterers in Forum, Orion, Leeuwenborch and Impulse and we collaborate with them on sustainability projects like Meatless Monday and the Student Cooking Corner. The last one is in collaboration with the Forum caterer and provides a platform for international dishes with a sustainable character. Every Wednesday, a student can sell a homemade dish and inspire other students to adopt sustainable diet.

What will be your responsibilities?
You will be in charge of managing the reservation requests of the Student Cooking Corner. Furthermore, you will have to regularly contact the forum catering and be creative with promoting the Student Cooking Corner among the student community in Wageningen. Besides that, you will become part of our volunteer team and are welcome to join our monthly get togethers as well as group bonding activities and workshops.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for someone with a love for food, who is able to work and communicate well with others. Someone who can work independently, and take proactive measures when needed.

Volunteer period: minimal 6 months (starting on the 1st of September)
Time investment: 1-2 hours per week

What will you learn?

  • Develop communication skills suitable to students and staff members.
  • Get a valuable insight of the catering services on campus.
  • Encourage students to make homemade (international) and sustainable dishes.

Seriously Sustainable Week – Support Team

Each year in October we organize in cooperation with the other green organisations of Wageningen a week full of activities such as workshops, talks, discussions and many more on sustainability. This years addition will be especially big because we are organizing the week in close cooperation with Thuis Wageningen. The week will take place from the 3rd to the 10th of October. In order to have everything prepared and run smoothly we need lots of helping hands. 

What will be your responsibilities? 

  • Help with all sorts of preparations.
  • Be present during the week on some of the activities and help out with what is needed.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for multiple students that are enthusiastic about sustainability and good at motivating themselves and others. This week is always lots of fun to be involved with!

Volunteer period: 1 months (September – half October)
Time investment: 2 hours per week preparation + some shifts during the SeSu week

What will you learn?

  • Develop organisational skills.
  • Increase your network among students and staff.
